It took twelve years to make Boyhood and only four hours to fete, with Richard Linklater’s coming-of-age named Best Picture – Drama at the end of the 72nd Golden Globes ceremony. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler returned for the third time as MCs.
Linklater was also named Best Director while one of his stars, Patricia Arquette, took home the statuette for Best Supporting Actress.
They are favourites for the upcoming Academy Awards in their respective categories. Another expectant Oscar victor, J.K. Simmons, won Best Supporting Actor for his turn in Whiplash.
The Grand Budapest Hotel scored a surprise victory over Birdman in the Best Picture – Comedy or Musical competition.
Birdman had previously collected gongs for Best Original Score, Best Screenplay, and Best Actor for Michael Keaton in the course of the evening.
Julianne Moore picked up Best Actress in a Drama for Still Alice, while Eddie Redmayne won Best Actor in a Drama for The Theory of Everything.
Amy Adams nabbed Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical for Big Eyes.
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association – that mysterious cabal whose voting tendencies towards cinematic contenders are frequently put into question – used their powers to crown the underseen underdogs in the television categories. It began with newcomer Gina Rodriguez being selected as Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical for The CW’s Jane the Virgin.
Brand new series (from the never-bef0re-awarded Amazon Prime) Transparent was named Best TV Comedy or Musical, and its lead, Jeffrey Tambor, Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical. Another newbie, The Affair, scored two pieces of hardware, for Best TV Drama and Best Actress in a Drama, to Ruth Wilson.
Kevin Spacey was voted as Best Actor in a Drama for the second season of House of Cards.
